Distribution of Wealth

Indicator Rationale

Distribution of wealth refers to the proportion of wealth controlled by a given percentage of the population.  Despite Australia being a very wealthy country, the wealth distribution between the top 10 percent of Australians and the bottom 30 percent has been increasing (Long, 2006).  Singles, single parents and pensioners have the lowest levels of wealth in our society (Melbourne Institute, 2006).
